Brunei Keeps Close Watch On ‘Lekima’
By Azaraimy HH

Bandar Seri Begawan - Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Services at the Department of Civil Aviation is keeping a close watch, monitoring the situation on the development of the tropical storm ‘Lekima’ that has now upgraded into a Severe Storm Category.

The tail effect of tropical storm Lekima was reportedly felt in the region.

Sources at Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Services at the Department of Civil Aviation told the Bulletin last night that the storm has also created southwesterly winds with wind speed somewhere around 10 knots.

The meteorological services said this condition coupled with over 390 hotspots in Kalimantan and Sabah reported around 2pm yesterday, produced somewhat hazy condition in. Brunei.

Meteorologists said they anticipated that the hazy situation would prolong. Yesterday’s visibility had dropped to around seven km.

However, the Sultanate is not expected to feel direct punches of Lekima in the land but the meteorological department told the Bulletin that offshore, strong winds and high waves were reported last night.

The Meteorological Services said they had already issued warnings to mariners.

The winds at sea is reaching somewhere in the region of 40 km/hour — 50 km/hour.

Meteorologists at the civil aviation department said that yesterday the tropical storm transformed from a depression into a severe tropical storm.

A severe tropical storm has the potential to develop into a typhoon. However, the transformation could lose strength if the tropical storm hits land.

However, Lekima was far up north around Vietnam as of yesterday and the Sultanate is safe from its direct impact although at sea the tail effect could be felt.

The meteorological services said Brunei could continue to experience the hazy situation if the southwesterly winds and high hotspots continue.

Bernama reported yesterday that the tropical storm Lekima, the 15th tropical storm this year, is approaching south China’s island province of Hainan and is expected to land in the south of the island or pass by on Wednesday.

Formed at 11am on Sunday over the South China Sea, the tropical storm was located at 14.9 degrees north latitude and 112.8 degrees east longitude at 8am on Monday, about 520km southeast of Sanya, Xinhua news agency quoted the Hainan Provincial meteorological Observatory, as saying.

The report said Lekima is packing winds of about 90 kilometres per hour at its eye and is heading towards northwest at a speed of 10 to 15km per hour, and is gaining momentum.

It is expected to hit the southern part of the island or pass by Hainan on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, in Kota Kinabalu strong winds brought with it lashing rain and had submerged some parts of the roads in water. Sabah Meteorological Services Department Director Tan Cheng Kok said the strong winds were associated with Lekima that is now somewhere between the Philippines and Vietnam. — Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard was involved in a traffic collision which left a 10-year-old boy with a suspected broken leg, his spokesman said.

The car was travelling along Grantham Road in Birkdale, Merseyside when the incident happened at 3.15pm.
The spokesman for the midfielder said: ‘Steven was driving very slowly through an area of Birkdale when a young boy ran out and hit the side of his car. Steven comforted the boy until the paramedics arrived.
‘There were apparently several eye-witnesses who saw the accident.
‘Steven later attended a police station where he produced his driving documents as a matter of routine and made a statement about the accident.
‘The Liverpool captain was distressed over the accident and has been in contact with the boy’s family to check his progress and plans to visit him in the next couple of days.’
Liverpool face Marseille in the Champions League at Anfield on Wednesday.
